Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals using such treatments must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a more gradual weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the amplified weight return.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced something activating and you're instantly starving," said an individual.

This difficulty is compounded if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
