No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route developed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this tragedy,” declared the head of state.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the previous year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another massive train initiative from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its responsibilities in public projects. They were built at an accelerated rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent questions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an urgent suspension in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been running in full accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national projects.
