The US President and his Colombian counterpart have intensified the rhetoric of their exchange, increasing strains bilaterally after American military units targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro from power.
"He has narcotics facilities and processing labs and is not going to be doing it very long," the US president stated.
Growing Tensions and Allegations
Speaking to the press on Sunday, the US president threatened analogous military action against Colombia, asserting the country faces serious problems and governed by an unwell individual who likes making narcotics and selling it to the United States."
While Colombia stands as the leading cocaine-producing country, there is no evidence implicating Gustavo Petro, elected two years ago, is directly tied to the business.
A Frayed Alliance
This nation was historically a key ally of the United States in the struggle combating drug cartels and benefited from bipartisan support from American politicians, yet ties have deteriorated dramatically after Trump was elected.
Its drug trade is predominantly run by illegal armed groups such as the Golf Clan, another leftist insurgency and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, the majority of whose members laid down arms after a historic peace agreement.
Petro's Strong Response
When asked if military intervention like that in Venezuela was being considered for Colombia, Trump replied: "I like the sound of that to me personally."
President Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who disarmed in the 1990s, rejected these allegations. "I am neither illegitimate and certainly not a drug trafficker," he declared.
"The US president speaks without knowledge. Stop slandering me," he posted online.
"If US bombs target rural communities, they will become thousands of guerrillas across the countryside. If they capture me, whom a large part of the population loves and respects, they will release the powerful force of the nation," he admonished.
From Fighter to Statesman
He passed some years as a young man participating with the radical M-19 guerrilla group but is not believed he did not participated in combat. After demobilizing, he was involved in creating the constitutional rewrite in 1991 and later became an influential politician. He served as mayor of the capital city before being elected president.
"I pledged to never again hold a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I shall resume arms again," he said.
Reinforced Protection along with Cross-Political Rejection
Colombia's defense chief stated that Petro's security detail had been reinforced.
Several members of Colombia’s political right have expressed support with Trump's stance, however, leaders from across the ideological divide have condemned the threats of an invasion on Colombia.
Political and Financial Sanctions
American authorities withdrew his travel authorization following he encouraged American soldiers to disobey unlawful commands. Months later, the US enacted economic restrictions against the president, his wife and a number of associates.
Concurrently as the US increased its troop levels in the Caribbean and striking suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, the US executed attacks on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
